The Deep Cleaning Checklist Pros Actually Use

A standard cleaning checklist has maybe 30–40 line items. A deep cleaning checklist has more than double that, because deep cleaning addresses every surface a standard clean intentionally skips. The line items aren't random — they're the surfaces and details that dust, grease, and grime accumulate on between deep cleans (typically every 3–6 months for an actively-occupied home).

Working from an actual checklist matters more than people think. Without one, even experienced cleaners miss the same five or six items over and over — usually the ones at the wrong eye level (above 7 feet or below 18 inches). The checklist below is the one our crews use in the field, top to bottom. Every line item is something we've watched homeowners forget to check on a walkthrough.

1) Inside oven (racks, walls, glass door). 2) Stovetop deep scrub including knobs. 3) Drip pans (replace if discolored). 4) Range hood and filter (degrease). 5) Inside microwave including turntable. 6) Inside fridge (shelves, drawers, gasket). 7) Top of fridge. 8) Inside dishwasher including filter and door seal. 9) Inside cabinets (vacuum then wipe). 10) Cabinet exteriors and handles. 11) Backsplash degrease.

12) Sink scrub and faucet descale. 13) Garbage disposal freshen. 14) Counters polish. 15) Small-appliance exteriors (coffee maker, toaster, kettle). 16) Window above sink (interior). 17) Window blinds (every slat). 18) Light fixtures and bulbs. 19) Switch plates. 20) Door handles both sides. 21) Trash can interior and exterior. 22) Floor scrub including under appliances if accessible.

1) Toilet bowl, exterior, base, bolts, and tank back. 2) Shower walls and floor (scrub). 3) Shower grout. 4) Showerhead descale. 5) Glass shower door (both sides) or curtain liner replacement. 6) Tub interior and exterior. 7) Sink scrub. 8) Faucet descale (including aerator). 9) Counter polish. 10) Mirror clean.

11) Medicine cabinet interior. 12) Cabinet under sink (empty, vacuum, wipe). 13) Exhaust fan cover (remove, wash, replace). 14) Light fixtures. 15) Switch plates and outlet covers. 16) Door including the top. 17) Baseboards. 18) Floor scrub including grout line at base of toilet.

Per bedroom: 1) Ceiling fan blades top and bottom. 2) Light fixtures. 3) Dust accessible high surfaces. 4) Headboard and bed frame dust. 5) Strip and remake bed (linens left in place unless requested). 6) Dust nightstands and dresser tops including underneath. 7) Wipe nightstand handles. 8) Mirror clean. 9) Closet floor vacuum and shelf wipe. 10) Window interior and sill. 11) Window track. 12) Blinds every slat.

Per living area: 13) Ceiling fan. 14) Light fixtures and lampshades. 15) TV screen and electronics dust. 16) Bookshelves (dust each shelf, books in place). 17) Coffee table top and bottom. 18) End tables. 19) Sofa cushions removed, vacuum crevices, cushions replaced. 20) Throw pillows fluff. 21) Window treatments. 22) Window tracks. 23) Baseboards. 24) Vacuum carpet edge-to-edge or mop hard floors.

These are the items that distinguish a real deep clean from a glorified standard clean: tops of door frames (dust collects), light switch plates in every room, outlet covers, door handles both sides, the top of the fridge, the top of cabinets, behind the toilet, the gasket of the front-load washer, the lint trap and dryer vent opening, ceiling fan blade tops, the underside of dining table edges where hands rest, stair treads vertical face (not just the horizontal), and the top of every interior door.
